If you have any raw wood surfaces that are starting to look a bit drab or banged up, or if you just want it waterproof, try this DIY wood polish recipe to make it look brand spanking new again. It’s made from beeswax and coconut oil, so it’s food safe and smells good too! You can use it on wooden furniture, chopping boards, wooden spoons – I’ve been using it on my Jord wood watch.
- 1 part beeswax
- 4 parts coconut oil (other oils will also work – walnut and mineral oils are popular choices, but I had a lot of coconut oil lying around so this was a good way of using it up!)
I used 1/4 teaspoon beeswax and 1 teaspoon coconut oil.
- Microwave mixture in a microwave-safe container at 10-15 second intervals, stirring in between (I used a glass jar – you can use a double boiler too, but the microwave method is much faster.)
- When everything is melted (it should be see-through, with no white bits), stir the mixture thoroughly, then pour it into a jar and leave to cool. It took mine about 40 seconds total microwave time to all be melted.
Once the mix is cool, it’ll have a soft balm-like texture. To use the polish, grab a rag or paper towel, dip it in the jar and use it to thoroughly coat your wooden object. Wait a few minutes for it to soak in, then buff away the excess with a clean cloth or tissue. Your wood will look revitalised and brand new! Regular treatment helps prevent cracking and damage. Since there’s no water in the polish, it’ll last for a while without preservatives or refrigerating. It’s very addictive once you see how pretty the polished wood looks – I guarantee you’ll be wandering around the house looking for more wooden things to polish!
