If you do laundry and you don’t have a bunch of mesh laundry bags (also called delicates bags, hosiery bags and a million other names), you should go out and grab one (or five) immediately. I have a whole assortment of delicates bags from Daiso ($2.80 a pop) and they’re absolutely awesome.
What do they do?
1. Protect delicate fabrics. Your washing machine is a cyclone of scratchy zips. If you have delicate clothes (stockings, silk, lace) that you don’t have the time or energy to hand wash them, a fine mesh bag will protect them from being torn up. Just make sure you don’t have any scratchy attachments on your clothes!
2. Prevent bra elastic from stretching. In the washing machine cyclone, bra straps get wrapped around all your other clothes. Overstretching elastic while wet makes this sort of frilly nuisance appear faster:
Just make sure you leave enough space in each bag for your bras to move so they get clean – bras have an annoying habit of huddling together!
3. Stop socks from being lost. Lost socks are the bane of my mornings. Putting them in a bag keeps your socks together, and prevents them from getting stuck in your washing machine and breaking it.
How do you use a mesh laundry bag?
You stick your clothing in them, then toss the bundle into the washing machine with the rest of your stuff. Don’t fill them up too much or the clothes won’t have space to move around and get clean! After you empty them, you can hang them up to dry with the rest of your clothes and reuse them over and over.
Where do I get them magic thangs?
I highly recommend the ones with zips over the drawstring type – it’s much easier to use and doesn’t come undone as easily, as long as you make sure there’s some way of keeping the zip shut. Mine have a piece of elastic at the end to tuck the zip into (you can see how much mine gets used from the extensive pilling!).
