If you’re reading this blog, you’re probably a veteran procrastinator too. Procrastination means inspired last-minute greatness, but it also means inspired last-minute stress, and that shit gives you cancer. And wrinkles.
Here’s my favourite time management life hack – the Pomodoro Technique. It’s based around an old school tomato-shaped windup egg timer (pomodoro is Italian for tomato).
The concept is simple. Instead of trying to rush out all your work in one big chunk, you subdivide your tasks into 25 minute sessions, punctuated by 5 minute breaks where you can grab coffee or go online shopping to your heart’s content! Every 2 hours you take a longer 20-30 minute break. During the 25 minute work session, if a distraction pops up, write it down for your next 5 minute break.
Although it sounds basic, it’s really quite genius – the 25 minute periods are short enough that you feel that your break is coming up soon, but long enough to really sink your teeth into a task. Having those scheduled breaks stops the “I’ll just do this quickly now” distractions which turn into a 3 hour Wikipedia trail. I’m super bad at distractions while working – I’ve been known to go on day-long procrastination trips!
To keep track of your time, there are a whole bunch of apps and sites that you can use. I particularly like Tomato Timer and Clockwork Tomato (Android).
